The Curse of the Mad Printer

A character development story, set up in Boston during the Prohibition years.

Your name is Samuel Leblanc, but everybody calls you Sam. You are originally from Southbridge, Massachusetts and were born to poverty. You are 16 years old. It is 1921.

You came to Boston and its glamour to try your luck. Your first months were rough but for a year now, you are an apprentice at Giddy Gideon Print Shop Pro, owned by a certain Gideon Sterngucker. When you started to work there, Gideon (affectionately called “Giddy” by all) took care of you like somebody from your own family.

You live in the attic on top of the print shop, you have food aplenty and he has taught you everything you need to know to use the mimeograph and the stencils. You have shown promising skills with the electro-stencil and you are a quick learner.

This knowledge has been handy, since last month you are handling the day-to-day at the print shop. Giddy is almost unseen at the shop during the day. You hear him toil away every night, when he has forbidden you to set foot in the shop. He has also turned crabby and taciturn.

His new customers, The Brotherhood of the Fleur de Sel, only visit the shop during the evenings. You recently found a whole on the attic's floor that peeks into the shop. You could take a look tonight, but spying on him while he works might be constructed as betraying his trust. What do you do?
